How to Safely Transport Biologics

Transporting biologics

If your company is involved in the transportation of biological materials overseas, you are already aware of how challenging ocean transport of biologics can be. Maintaining the biopharma cold chain is critical with many of these products, as failing to keep them at the proper temperature could render them useless or even dangerous.

What Are Biologics?

Biologics refers to biological products, a term that covers a wide range of products that are often used in medical research and treatment, such as vaccines, allergens, blood products, biological tissues and proteins. These products are critical for cutting-edge biomedical research, coming up with new medical treatments for the most challenging health conditions and diseases. Naturally, as products that come from natural, living sources, biologics can be extremely fragile.

What Is the Biopharma “Cold Chain?”

Unlike chemically synthesized drugs that may be easy to classify and maintain, biological products are extremely sensitive. They are very vulnerable to heat and quite susceptible to contamination by invading microbes.

This makes getting your biologics from the place where they are manufactured or harvested to the research or health care facility where they will ultimately be put to use without them degrading or becoming contaminated can be an extremely challenging proposition. These products will need to be maintained in a temperature-sensitive environment — often in below-freezing temperatures — all the way from their origination point to any distribution center, possibly to a warehouse and finally an on-site storage facility without any interruption.

Klinge Containers for Temperature Controlled Biologics Transportation

When it comes to containers for safe transportation of biologics from their origination point to final destination, you can rely on Klinge. Klinge has been offering dependable refrigerated shipping solutions for a range of industries including food and beverage, the dangerous goods market (where issues with temperature control can literally cause fires on board the vessels), the military and pharma for more than 40 years, and our containers can reliably transport all your vaccines, tissue samples, blood products and other biologics.

We have two highly effective biologic container transportation options to suit your business depending upon your needs.

1. Dual Redundant Refrigeration Unit & Integral Genset

The first, for biological products that need to be kept at a temperature no greater than -10 degrees Celsius to -25 degrees Celsius, is our Model NMR-262, the Dual Redundant Refrigeration Unit & Integral Genset. This container has two fully independent reefer units with separate thermostat and control, so you will always have a backup unit to kick in immediately if the first one goes down. Add to this the integral genset, and you have a continuous source of energy powering the unit — even when the unit is separated from an external power source or if there is a sudden loss of external power.

2. Dual Redundant Deep Freezer Container

For biological products that must have even deeper refrigeration, from -40 degrees Celsius down to -65 degrees Celsius, we have Model NMF-372, the Dual Redundant Deep Freezer Container. This model has a number of useful features, including the same two separate reefer units but with even lower temperature capacity. This unit defrosts one system while the other is working to keep your biologics cold, and vice versa, for even longer and greater protection.
